Nice, that works.
At this time, Lord Byron had hopped off her lap, stretching his front and hind legs a bit before padding to the front door. He looked over at Claret, making a whiney “hrmm” sound to get her attention.
“Alright, alright, I’ll walk you,” she conceded, getting up and stretching her arms high above her head. She shoved her phone in her back pocket, grabbing her keys and going over to the door as Lord Byron started hopping around and barking excitedly. She grabbed his orange leash off the hook by the door, latching it on to his collar.
She contemplated texting Five for a moment and telling him she was stepping outside for a few, but ultimately decided against it. She’d just be gone for a minute.
Leash in hand, Claret walked out the door, mindful to lock it behind her. The black pug nearly pulled her down the hallway and up the stairs with excited force, but she managed to remain in control of the little guy and not have him take off running. After having him for a few years, you’d think he’d have gotten better at being walked, but Lord Byron never stopped getting overwhelmingly excited for the short walks he’d go on several times a day.
He immediately guided Claret over to the neighbor’s flowers— pissing right over the petunias. Claret shook her head, amused, as she took her phone out of her pocket to send Five another text.
You sleeping soon?

Yeah, 7am was a bit early. Claret didn’t really consider herself a morning person by any means, but she had a feeling Five here might be. But like he said— the sooner he was here, the safer she was, right? She didn’t want him to lose out on sleep for her sake, though.
How about 8am?
I think we can both use as much sleep as we can get

This was dangerous and she should not be having as much fun as she was. She was asking for so much trouble right now, and she had to be careful not to get carried away. As fun as this was, the last thing she wanted was for this to become irreparably awkward for both of them.
You’re adorable lol
Anyway
Yes, changing the subject is good. Safe.
What time should I be expecting you in the morning?

Oh my god, did he just respond with something equally as playful? Holy shit. Straight-edge, seemingly innocent Five flirting back? Well fuck, now she didn't even feel bad for it anymore. Unless he was just trying to get on her good side, in which case she felt like an asshole. Should she stop now, try and keep things safe and friendly? No, she was already in too deep.
She realized she was smiling.
Is that an offer?

Claret was always rather fond of her own name. It sounded sort of regal, now that she thought about it... though that may be that she shared a name with a sort of wine. Different pronunciation, of course, though the association is still there. Her full name rolled right off the tongue in French, though many Americans here had a tendency to butcher it. A shame, really. It was the only reason she missed France. I bet it'd sound best coming from you ;)Dammit. She did it again.

It must have been so dehumanizing for someone to have been named a number. You put a literal value on them, but take away any human or personal element to it. Was he made fun of in school? Do other people actually think it's his real name? It was difficult for Claret to wrap her head around. Initially, she thought it could've been some code name, maybe a nickname, as part of him being attached to the criminal underground, but thinking about it now... Man, did his mother even love him? If he and the rest of his siblings were adopted and given names so... impersonal, then Claret couldn't imagine how any parent would have loved their child enough for that.
No kidding
I'd never forgive my mom if she named me something like that, lol
No offense
I was adopted too, but I'd say I got a lot luckier in the name department
I mean, the name Five could be really cool
I can't say I've met anyone else with a name like that
Makes you a lot more memorable, I think

Claret deadpanned. That’s why he has a name like Five? Wait, wait, wait, wait...
You mean to tell me
Your parents named you all in the order you guys were adopted/by age??
With literal numbers???
She hated how that made sense and absolutely no sense at all. The name Five made sense now, but the fact that his adopted parents named all their kids after numbers was doubtful. Uncanny, even. That was so weird! Who puts their kids through that? NUMBERS? Man, now she really felt bad for him.
Please tell me you’re joking

She can imagine how traumatizing that must've been for a fourteen year old. Claret could picture the cat still being around, older, lazying about in someone's home. It's a nice thought. Cat naps and pets from whoever cares for her now.
Yeah, she's probably living her best life right now
Well, now you have Lord Byron to fill the pet-absent hole in your life, lol
We don't have much, but it's something
Do you at least have siblings to keep you company?

Damn, that was... really sad. Claret didn't want to think about what could've happened to the cat. Her mind drifted to dark places... Living in the woods like that, just a stray cat on her own, anything could've happened to the poor girl. Best hope was that someone took her in, and that she was now living happily in the city, which Claret supposed was probably more likely than anything bad happening to the cat. Yeah... she convinced herself that's what happened.
I'm sorry :(
Maybe someone rescued her
I know lots of people who would've taken in a stray cat if they found one in the woods
How old were you then?

Claret couldn't imagine living without some sort of animal companionship. She had to pity the poor guy.
Shitty landlord I'm guessing? LolShe'd had her share of bad landlords-- her old one, back when she lived with Johnny, didn't let her keep any pets. She'd wanted to take her cat from home, but wasn't able to... she was absolutely miserable. She couldn't imagine living without Lord Byron, now. The little guy was all she had. She scratched behind his ears affectionately. What happened to the cat?

He seemed to like Lord Byron, so Five just earned a good chunk of friendship points. It was kinda cute, if not a bit childish that he calls all dogs "pups".
Lord Byron is the name of a Romantic poet i like
Nothing crazy
Do you have any pets?

Claret took his response as his way of saying that he's open to the idea. She'll take that. She couldn't help but roll her eyes at the whole "job comes first" mindset he's in, but she had to respect that he put her safety on a high priority, even if it was for pay. He was willing to talk about his hobbies and open up to her about his feelings regarding this job but he clearly hadn't forgone all professional pretenses yet. That's okay-- baby steps. They'll get there. She didn't expect those walls to come down on day one, but this was good progress.
Sounds good to me!Lord Byron is excited to have a new friendShe snapped and sent a photo of the pug resting on her lap, lazy eyes gazing up at the camera. The black pug was cuter than most, she'd say, but he definitely has this dumb, derpy quality about him that is typical of smaller, bug-eyed dogs. He was definitely charming. A little smelly and chaotic sometimes, maybe, but a delight nonetheless. He was young-- about two or three years old now. She'd rescued him shortly after she moved to her home a few years ago, finding a box of pug puppies on the street a block away. She had to give the other pups away, she couldn't take care of a whole litter, but she likes to tell herself that she had found them all good homes. She'd kept Lord Byron-- named him after one of her favorite writers. He's always had a lot of personality and a lot of energy. He wasn't a smart dog by any means, but he was well-behaved, and Claret tended to think of him sort of like her best friend. As long as Lord Byron didn't end up loving Five more, she thought having someone else in the house would make him happy. Someone else to play with and terrorize.

His photos were astonishing.
Claret was in shock and awe-- she expected amateur-level work, but this, especially the one of the river, may as well have been taken by a professional. She zoomed in on her phone, observing all the detail in the image. Compositionally, it was superb, but she felt like the charm really did come in the lighting and the way he was able to capture so much in a single shot. It was absolutely incredible. She couldn't help but wonder why he hadn't decided to become a professional photographer as a career. She was almost certain people would pay high prices for prints of something like this.
Oh, she was definitely stealing him. She'd never need to work another photographer or a modeling agency ever again! How could she not pass up this opportunity?
Holy shitThese are phenomenalI think you have a real gift with photographyIt was true. She thought his skills were almost unrivaled, especially in comparison to other photographers she's worked with in the past. If he's spent most of his life practicing his photography, with him being as young as he is, she had to wonder how good he'll be in another few years. It was gift he needed to nurture, she thought, but she wasn't about to enforce her opinion on someone she just met. There had to be a reason this was just a hobby and not his actual profession, so she didn't feel comfortable voicing her thoughts on that matter.
She bit her lip and looked away, contemplating another response before texting again. I'm happy to model for you if you're ever interested ;)
Only if you want to of course
Just know the offer's there <3

The fact that Five seemed to enjoy baking was intriguing. Maybe it was the gender stereotypes associated with certain culinary fields, but it was definitely unexpected for him to like baking of all things. It's kind of charming and innocent to think about... a member of a notable crime family and her new bodyguard being into baking of all things. Did he like baking cakes, cookies, pastries...? She'd definitely need to ask him to make her something when they were together. She made a mental note to pick up baking supplies and ingredients tomorrow.
A love for photography seemed a lot more expected. He seemed like the kind of person who'd enjoy creating art like that, and Claret was half tempted to ask him to show her some of what he's photographed over the years. She'd worked with some photographers for modeling agencies in the past, but those instances were few and far between these days. She'd become her own photographer very easily, but obviously she was more skilled with photographing herself, not other things, and her phone worked about as good as anything else. She had a proper camera and a tripod, of course, but there was nothing like a person's touch to something like photography that really brings photos and videos alive. Come to think of it, if he claimed to be so skilled with a camera, she might be able to take this opportunity to utilize him for pictures on her social media pages. She couldn't assume he'd agree, of course, but the next time she needs to take fashion pictures or videos, she might just ask him to help. She could broaden the range of what she could produce if she had a human photographer or videographer, and negate the necessity to contact a third party for her modeling shoots. Hell, this could be great for her.
But then she'd have to pay him more money, and she couldn't guarantee he'd enjoy slaving around for the benefit of her social media. Well, it could be an idea she brings up once they get closer.
Oh that's really cool actually
Why haven't you used it lately?
Could you send me some pictures you've taken?
Pretty please <3

He struck her as being a lot more open and unprofessional over text, as nuanced as that seemed. She might be reading too much into it, though. Perhaps the absence of a dense, professional atmosphere helped him loosen up a bit-- she can imagine how he'd probably need to maintain appearances in public, or around clients. Did that mean she was any different, or was he putting their texts into a more casual sphere? She did want them to become better friends, and lose any stiff atmosphere between them, but she hadn't expected him to take that to heart right away. Maybe he was being more transparent just to appease her, but she didn't want to think he was that manipulative. No, he seemed far more genuine.
The fact that he was excited was interesting. He said he was nervous before, too. Was he lonely? Maybe he wasn't used to being around someone for an extended period of time. It was kind of sad to think about, but also sort of endearing. She didn't want to jump to conclusions, obviously, but maybe he was just excited to get to spend time with a client instead of being a stiff board around them. Perhaps her plan to make a friend out of him meant more to Five than she originally thought.
Lord Byron wined from his place on her lap, begging for attention, so Claret gave him head scratches and pets with one hand while she typed out a response.
Yep!
I'm hoping we can become pretty solid friends in all this
The circumstances are shitty, of course, but that doesn't mean we can't have some fun
Do you have any hobbies?
