Lord Byron, her little dog.
Five received the photo not long after Claret had sent her texts, and his eyes lit up. A tiny, lil pug was on her lap staring up at the camera lazily, and Five was overjoyed to see this. Cute animals were a weakness of his, and a little pug in all of its huggableness and squished-face glory was going to be there at Claret's place. Oh, he had so many headpats to give the little guy.
That's a really cute pup!
Sorry, I call all dogs pups.
Lord Byron is an interesting name. Where'd it come from?
Five was definitely curious about such a unique name. Most people name their dogs things like Lucky, or Spot. Though, he'd once met a chihuahua named George Washington Carver. He still didn't understand why to this very day.
He wondered if Lord Byron was as random and strange as that, or if it was a name that had significance at all to Claret.

He seemed to like Lord Byron, so Five just earned a good chunk of friendship points. It was kinda cute, if not a bit childish that he calls all dogs "pups".
Lord Byron is the name of a Romantic poet i like
Nothing crazy
Do you have any pets?

A Romantic poet, huh? So she liked poetry? That was something Five would keep in mind for later. It was a simple enough explanation.
Oh I'll have to check that out sometime.
Unfortunately I don't
Not easy to keep where I live
Used to take care of that cat from the previous photo for a bit
Was a stray I found a long time ago
He couldn't say what happened to that cat though. Seemed to have disappeared around the time Seven did.

Claret couldn't imagine living without some sort of animal companionship. She had to pity the poor guy.
Shitty landlord I'm guessing? LolShe'd had her share of bad landlords-- her old one, back when she lived with Johnny, didn't let her keep any pets. She'd wanted to take her cat from home, but wasn't able to... she was absolutely miserable. She couldn't imagine living without Lord Byron, now. The little guy was all she had. She scratched behind his ears affectionately. What happened to the cat?

Something like that haha
Shitty landlord... being Mother Kenne. He didn't straight up want to call her shitty, just that things were... really strict. Besides, someone like One would never let him have a pet of any kind either. He was a hardass who didn't believe in any sort of downtime or distractions. Five wondered if the man had any joy in his life at all.
I used to feed and take care of her daily
then one day I went to the same forest clearing and she just
stopped showing up, I guess. Have no idea where she might've gone...
was pretty sad by it. closest thing i ever had to a pet.
I just hope she's okay, wherever she is
That was a sincere and genuine thought of his. He also hoped the same for Seven. Maybe they were taking care of the cat, just on the downlow somewhere. Maybe that was too optimistic.

Damn, that was... really sad. Claret didn't want to think about what could've happened to the cat. Her mind drifted to dark places... Living in the woods like that, just a stray cat on her own, anything could've happened to the poor girl. Best hope was that someone took her in, and that she was now living happily in the city, which Claret supposed was probably more likely than anything bad happening to the cat. Yeah... she convinced herself that's what happened.
I'm sorry :(
Maybe someone rescued her
I know lots of people who would've taken in a stray cat if they found one in the woods
How old were you then?

Yeah, that's the hope
I like thinking I'll just bump into her again someday
Five texted, stopping a moment before continuing. It really was a long time ago. Cats could live for a long time if they were well taken care of, right? It was weird though... it's been seven years since Seven disappeared. He could never forget that. He was too young to understand what it all really meant when he lost both Seven and the cat. Even now he didn't quite understand, he just knew that it changed everyone, including him.
I was 14. So it's been a good 7 years
She's probably a big, fluffy cat by now
An absolute unit, as the internet people would say.

She can imagine how traumatizing that must've been for a fourteen year old. Claret could picture the cat still being around, older, lazying about in someone's home. It's a nice thought. Cat naps and pets from whoever cares for her now.
Yeah, she's probably living her best life right now
Well, now you have Lord Byron to fill the pet-absent hole in your life, lol
We don't have much, but it's something
Do you at least have siblings to keep you company?

Siblings... They were his siblings, but the situation was quite unique to say the least. If she thought his name was strange, well...
I can't wait to meet Lord Byron!
I do have siblings. I guess you can call them that.
We're... well, adopted seems to be the right word for it
It's why I have a name like Five
He didn't want to go into too much detail yet. He felt more personal matters safer to discuss in person anyway.

Claret deadpanned. That’s why he has a name like Five? Wait, wait, wait, wait...
You mean to tell me
Your parents named you all in the order you guys were adopted/by age??
With literal numbers???
She hated how that made sense and absolutely no sense at all. The name Five made sense now, but the fact that his adopted parents named all their kids after numbers was doubtful. Uncanny, even. That was so weird! Who puts their kids through that? NUMBERS? Man, now she really felt bad for him.
Please tell me you’re joking

Claret definitely put it together right away. He supposed he wasn't being vague enough, but what's done is done. His name was strange, and never quite bothered him... until now anyway. He wasn't sure why he felt so self-conscious by it. Haha, I guess it really is weird...
That's right though. I'm the fifth one, so Five
I guess Mother wasn't quite creative with names. He didn't want to tell her it was because they were all raised to be soldiers. The story of the fifth born, in reality, was the fifth to make it this far. Claret

It must have been so dehumanizing for someone to have been named a number. You put a literal value on them, but take away any human or personal element to it. Was he made fun of in school? Do other people actually think it's his real name? It was difficult for Claret to wrap her head around. Initially, she thought it could've been some code name, maybe a nickname, as part of him being attached to the criminal underground, but thinking about it now... Man, did his mother even love him? If he and the rest of his siblings were adopted and given names so... impersonal, then Claret couldn't imagine how any parent would have loved their child enough for that.
No kidding
I'd never forgive my mom if she named me something like that, lol
No offense
I was adopted too, but I'd say I got a lot luckier in the name department
I mean, the name Five could be really cool
I can't say I've met anyone else with a name like that
Makes you a lot more memorable, I think

No forgiveness, huh? Five wasn't sure what he felt about his own Mother, or if he really even knew what unforgiveness even really felt like. All things considered, he was grateful to her for taking him in and raising him, rather than letting him die on the streets before he even really knew any better. But sometimes, he wished he had a semblance of a regular life. He had to have had a name before she picked him up, but it eluded him...
I'll take that as a compliment from you
It's nice to be memorable at least
I think Claret is a really pretty name though
One of those names that just sounds really nice to say
If that makes sense
He thought her name was pretty unique. Claret Vauleaux. It definitely made her sound high class if anything. And she seemed to carry herself like she was, though she was approachable, sweet, and caring rather than pompous and full of herself.

Claret was always rather fond of her own name. It sounded sort of regal, now that she thought about it... though that may be that she shared a name with a sort of wine. Different pronunciation, of course, though the association is still there. Her full name rolled right off the tongue in French, though many Americans here had a tendency to butcher it. A shame, really. It was the only reason she missed France. I bet it'd sound best coming from you ;)Dammit. She did it again.

Five's heart once again did the 'holy shit she really said that' skipping that made him feel like it would simultaneously explode and implode all at once. His cheeks got warm, and he exhaled sharply in an effort to keep his nerves calm. This... this was really happening, wasn't it? Or was he looking too much into it? She put a winky face emoji, so maybe she meant it, but maybe she was just teasing him...
The gears turned in his head, best they could anyway. Did he return her playfulness, or did he play the safe route and say something completely innocuous? One wrong move, and their time together could turn quite awkward...
Maybe I'll say it all you want then
Was... was that good? It could be taken in either way. It was probably the safest thing he could've said, and he would leave it up to her to decide where to take it from there. His heart was racing. He still couldn't believe any of this was happening. He was always too nervous to directly message her online despite being such a heavy patron, and here he was with a completely direct line to her.
What was life anymore?
